A common question asked in this community is: “Who can have an ESSA?” People are often confused if there are any requirements in order to own one.
There are a few reasons why someone might say you are not allowed to have an emotional support stuffed animal, but the ones I’ve heard don’t hold any truth.
Is There an Age Limit?
Short answer: No.
Longer Answer: No, because everyone has hard-days, and soft, comforting objects like a plushie don’t just help people under the age of 10.
There is something special as a teenager or adult about letting yourself have some whimsy. In so many ways it is freeing, to let go of what people might think and just find ways to feel a little bit better.
Do You Need to Have a Disability?
I believe that if you feel like having an ESSA would help you feel better, that is the only thing that matters. A diagnosis, whether it be official, self-diagnosed, or non-existent, does not disqualify someone from having an emotional support stuffed animal. If you need some support throughout your daily life, there is no reason not to try a support plush.
What If I Just Want One For Fun?
That is totally okay too! Unsurprisingly, a lot of people think these stuffed animals look cute. Seeing a little toy dog or platypus getting geared up in a vest and goggles, brushed, and cared for is going to be appealing to some! Occasionally there might be someone who “roleplays” or plays pretend with their stuffed animal, acting out training it or feeding them. There are no wrong ways to go about being an ESSA owner.
Gatekeeping has no place in a community designed for making people feel safer. I for one enjoy seeing all of the different kinds of people who share their ESSA stories! Anyone can have an ESSA!

To Whom It May Concern:
I just wish to add that Emotional Support Stuffed Animals (ESSAS) are not for fun/as a means for leisure. Their purpose is to provide comfort to individuals who are persevering through trials and tribulations that come with life.
I absolutely concur regarding the rest of the article and respect your efforts to educate the public about such coping mechanisms.
Thank you.
Additionally, I admire your article regarding methods as to how one can spend time with their ESSA.
