A common question asked in this community is: “Who can have an ESSA?” People are often confused if they are any requirements in order to own one.
There are a million reasons why someone might say you are not allowed to have an emotional support stuffed animal, but the ones I’ve heard don’t hold any truth.
Is There an Age Limit?
Short answer: No.
Longer Answer: No, because everyone has hard-days, and soft, comforting objects like a plushie don’t just help people under the age of 10.
There is something special as an adult about letting yourself be a kid again. In so many ways it is freeing, to let go of what people might think and just find ways to feel at least a little bit better.
Do You Need to Have a Disability?
I believe that if you feel like having an ESSA would help you feel better, that is the only thing that matters. A diagnosis, whether it be official, self-diagnosed, or non-existent, does not disqualify someone from having an emotional support stuffed animal.
What If I Just Want One For Fun?
That is totally okay too! Unsurprisingly, a lot of people think these stuffed animals look cute. Seeing a little toy dog getting geared up in a vest and goggles, brushed, and cared for is going to be appealing to some!
Gatekeeping has no place in a community designed for making people feel safer. I for one enjoy seeing all of the different kinds of people who share their ESSA stories! Anyone can have an ESSA.
