You most likely have some in your room, or at least had one as a kid. An object that brings you security when you are scared or comfort when you something soft in your life: a stuffed animal.
You may have heard the term on social media and became curious, or you know someone who has one. But keep in mind that these are not just for young kids, many adults can and do keep one with them for some much needed escape from their anxiety.
What does E.S.S.A. actually stand for? Well, that acronym you keep seeing plastered over this website stands for “Emotional Support Stuffed Animal.” Other names you might hear include support plush, emotional support stuffed plush, or emotional support stuffed toy.
Why an ESSA?
I have anxiety, and to this day I still have not found a perfect solution. What I do have however, is a stuffed animal. When I first heard the word “ESSA,” I had no idea what it stood for, let alone how much having one could help my daily life. Most people already know about the calming presence that your pet can provide, but unfortunately there are so many reasons why someone either can’t own or doesn’t want to own an emotional support animal or service dog.
That is where the plushie comes in. While they are not comparable to a trained ESA or service dog, they can still provide comfort. And that is the main reason why most people will use an ESSA: comfort.
- They can be brought with you almost anywhere, and can be put away when not needed.
- They are accessible to anyone. Real pets, and especially service dogs, can be quite expensive. ESSAs can be as low-cost or as fancy as you decide. You probably already have one! You don’t need to buy a new stuffed animal for it to be a support plush.
- Stuffed animals provide sensory/tactile comfort and a sense of security. If you’re going into a stressful situation, having someone with you that you trust can really make all of the difference. ESSAs can sort of bridge the gap between not having a person to accompany you while still holding onto to some sense of security.
What Makes a Stuffed Animal an Emotional Support Stuffed Animal?
While many content creators in the ESSA community typically have a specific brand of plushie, this is in no way a requirement. ANY stuffed animal can give you emotional support. The old raggedy toy you’ve had since you were a little kid can be one! Often times, those old stuffed animals may even be more comforting to you simply because of the sentimental value you’ve given to it. That’s how it is for me, I have a rabbit from my grandmother (but I never take it outside of my home for fear of losing it!)
The thing that makes a regular old toy into a certified ESSA, is the handler calling it one.
Vests and accessories are also a fun add-on to make your stuffed animal a little cuter, but in no way make or break an ESSA’s “status.” There really is no rule that determines what is or isn’t comforting to someone.

If you think an emotional support stuffed animal could help you or maybe even a friend or family member feel a little safer, try it out! ESSAs are not a once and done magic-button solution, but even if hugging one every once in a while makes someone calmer, then that is a step in the right direction.
If you’re not buying a new stuffed animal, try giving an old one a new life. Give it a name and personality, make the decision to take it with you more often. That is what will make a regular ol’ toy an emotional support stuffed animal.
